NASL and the MISL referees had numbers on the backs mostly for TV and announcers. The numbers were given out in order of best to worst with the time you began in the league as a factor. So someone with the number one was there from the beginning and the guy with number 36 came later and was a rookie. They did away with the numbers after MISL came back under USSF.
