Agree completely with Ed. Too many beeps will drive the referee crazy
and he/she will become desensitized to its importance.
Use the "beep" for critical situations -- for example you've raised the
flag for offside but the referee is running toward his coffin corner
with his back to your flag. He's digging himself into a hole as the
seconds ticks off and he doesn't realize the flag is up behind him. Now
you need to help the referee extricate himself before the hole gets too
deep.
Beep the referee. When he turns around, sees the flag, blows the
whistle, and gives you a sheepish grin ("Oh, thanks. I missed the
flag.") you'll have used the beeper flag as it was intended.
Obviously the use of the flag (timing, specific situations, etc.) must
be discussed in the pregame.
